On February 6, 2023, two deadly earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 struck nearly 10 provinces in southern Turkey. As of noon on February 9, the death toll rose to 14,014 and the number of injured reached 63,794, with thousands of buildings collapsed and many people still trapped under the rubble.
In the four days after the strong earthquake, rescue workers and volunteers stationed in Turkey worked day and night to rescue people trapped in the rubble, and Chinese-funded enterprises operating in Turkey also made every effort to provide assistance and support to the earthquake-stricken areas .
After learning that the rescue work urgently needed large-scale machinery to rescue people under the rubble, Zoomlion, Sany Group and other Chinese construction machinery manufacturers operating in Turkey immediately dispatched machinery and equipment to the earthquake-stricken area to support the rescue.
Zoomlion's excavators and rescue teams are working in the hardest-hit Hatay province, and the team has helped rescue more than 20 people. Meanwhile, Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei provided spare parts, generators and mobile base stations to help smooth out communication disruptions in the quake zone.
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Turkey Branch announced that it has provided 1 million Turkish lira (about 53,100 U.S. dollars) to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) to assist earthquake victims. "As ICBC Turkey, we provided cash assistance of 1 million lira to meet the urgent needs of citizens affected by the devastating earthquake and teams conducting rescue operations in harsh winter conditions," the bank said in a statement.
Another Chinese bank, Bank of China Turkey, delivered relief items such as blankets, heaters and baby items to earthquake victims. In addition, the bank donated 560,000 liras (approximately US$30,000) to AFAD to support earthquake relief and affected people in Turkey.
China Ocean Shipping Company also delivered cash and relief materials to the earthquake-stricken areas in Turkey to support the relief work and help the affected people. Hikvision, a Chinese state-owned video surveillance equipment maker and supplier, sent quilts and thick coats to those deemed in need.Editor/Ma Xue
