2023 is the tenth anniversary of the the Belt and Road Initiative. In 2017, New Zealand signed the the Belt and Road Cooperation Agreement with China, becoming the first signatory among western developed countries, and the cooperation between China and New Zealand has reached a higher level.
Sir John Key served as Prime Minister of New Zealand from 2008 to 2016. Before this visit to China, he had already experienced it ten times. In July 2023, he visited China again with several New Zealand companies such as Stonewood Yaoshi, and Hainan was an important part of his visit. In his opinion, Hainan has made tremendous progress and he is confident in further developing trade with South Pacific countries. Summarizing the ten year history of the the Belt and Road Initiative, he said: "This decade is an important milestone. This is consistent with the fact that New Zealand has always been in the forefront of countries with a positive attitude towards China."
