When a steel artery spanning approximately 1035 kilometers crosses mountains and rivers, connecting two countries, every breath it takes is related to the pulse of trade. Now, the core node of this artery at the Laotian end - Moding Station, is undergoing its first large-scale expansion surgery in nearly four years of operation.

The reconstruction and expansion project of Boten Station of China Laos Railway has officially started construction recently, marking the first large-scale expansion and reconstruction in Laos since the opening of the whole line in December 2021, which is an international railway corridor connecting China and Southeast Asia. Moding Station is located in the core area of the Laos China border, adjacent to the national gate, and is a key hub station for cross-border trains entering and exiting the country. It undertakes the daily tasks of distributing and transferring a large amount of bilateral goods between China and Laos.

Over the past three years since its opening, with the continuous warming of cross-border economic and trade cooperation between China and Laos, the layout of industrial parks along the route has accelerated, and the demand for passenger and freight transportation has rapidly increased. The capacity of existing station facilities is approaching saturation, and capacity expansion and upgrading are urgently needed. According to Lao Zhong Railway Co., Ltd., after the renovation is completed, the freight clearance capacity of Moding Station will be increased by more than 10%, and the efficiency of train formation and reception will also achieve a qualitative leap.

Segmented construction ensures safe passage

This renovation is not a solo performance by a single entity, but a collaborative ensemble of multiple units. The project is organized and coordinated by the Lao Zhong Railway Company, with multiple units including the Luang Prabang Maintenance Center, Vientiane Operation Center, China Railway Eighth Engineering Group Co., Ltd., and China Railway Construction Electrification Bureau working together and promoting linkage. The construction adopts a strategy of segmented implementation and step-by-step opening, which ensures the progress of the renovation while minimizing the impact on the operation of existing lines, achieving dual line parallel construction and transportation support.

The key step from opening to improving quality

The expansion of Moding Station appears to be a facility upgrade for a port station, but in essence, it is a strategic reinforcement of the China Laos interconnected logistics channel. After the transformation is completed, the station will more efficiently serve the cross-border trade between China and Laos and the normalized operation of international trains, further release the cross-border transport potential of the China Laos railway, and continuously inject new momentum into the economic and trade exchanges between China and ASEAN. With more than three years of opening to traffic, the China Laos Railway is moving from building to running and strengthening. The renovation of Moding Station may just be a microcosm of the upgrading of this north-south corridor. In the future, as regional interconnectivity continues to deepen, this steel corridor will carry even greater expectations.Editor/Cheng Liting
