The UK government has announced an investment of £ 300 million to launch a high content, low enriched uranium program aimed at producing enriched uranium to provide fuel for the next generation of nuclear reactors. According to the government, this investment will support HALEU's domestic production, which is currently only produced on a commercial scale by Russia.

The UK Department of Energy Security and Net Zero Emissions has stated that the country will become a pioneer in introducing advanced HALEU nuclear fuel programs in Europe. The initiative aims to increase the supply of upcoming nuclear projects while reducing dependence on the global energy market, thereby weakening Vladimir Putin's influence.

In addition, this investment is an important component of the strategy to achieve up to 24GW of clean and reliable nuclear power by 2050, accounting for a quarter of the UK's electricity demand. An additional £ 10 million will be allocated to cultivate professional knowledge and infrastructure for manufacturing various advanced nuclear fuels within the UK, which will help ensure sustained domestic nuclear fuel supply and provide support to international partners.

It is expected that this will consolidate the UK's position as a global leader in nuclear fuel production, with local capabilities in uranium enrichment and fuel manufacturing in the northwest of England.

The UK provided the world with the first operational nuclear power plant, and now we will become the first European country outside of Russia to produce advanced nuclear fuel. This is crucial for energy security both domestically and internationally, and is built on the historical competitive advantage of the UK.

The UK government expects the country's first small-scale modular reactor plant to start operating in the early 2030s and has stated that this funding will promote a nuclear fuel production center in the northwest of England. In addition, this investment will support domestic industry and employment, while also helping to revive nuclear energy in the UK and overseas.Editor/XingWentao
