On February 20, 2024, the Slovenian Electricity Company announced that it plans to build two nuclear power units with a total installed capacity of 2.4 GWe.

The Slovenian government and Gen Energija have openly discussed the possibility of building two new units in Krsko. Previously, the company planned to build a 1.1GWe class unit.

The Korszko Nuclear Power Plant, located in KRS-Ko, southern Slovenia, is the main nuclear power plant in Slovenia. The plant was completed in 1980 and went into commercial operation on October 2, 1981. There is currently one Westinghouse 727 MWE-class unit in operation, which was commissioned in 1983 and has been approved to operate until 2043. The Korshko nuclear power plant is jointly owned by Slovenia and Croatia. The plant has been in operation since the 1980s and has a 2,000-megawatt reactor. The plant generates 40 percent of Slovenia's electricity output. A long-running dispute over the plant's ownership has strained relations between the two countries. On 29 December 2020, the Korshko nuclear Power plant was temporarily shut down due to the initiation of protective procedures following a magnitude 6.4 earthquake near the Croatian capital Zagreb.

HSE is the largest power generation company in Slovenia, accounting for about 60% of domestic production and is considered a critical infrastructure for the country. Established by the Slovenian government in 2001 and owned by the state, the company operates a number of hydroelectric, thermal and solar power plants and coal mines across the country, as well as subsidiaries in Italy, Serbia and Hungary. Potential suppliers already approached by the Slovenian power company include Westinghouse of the United States, Korea Hydro Nuclear Power Corporation (KHNP) and EDF of France. The company expects to submit a site application for the new project in spring 2024. Editor/Xu Shengpeng
