On November 1, 2022, Wang Shoujun, chairman of the Chinese Nuclear Society, said at the 23rd Pacific Nuclear Energy Conference that as of June 2022, China had 53 nuclear power units in operation and 23 under construction, ranking first in the world in terms of the number of nuclear power units under construction. Ten nuclear power units have been approved in 2022. It is expected that in the next five years, China will further accelerate the expansion of the installed capacity, maintain the approved construction pace of six to eight nuclear power units per year, and the nuclear power generation will also increase significantly.

China has installed more than 55 million kilowatts of nuclear power units, 39 of which have been put into operation in the past decade. China has 28 units under construction or approved, with an installed capacity of about 33 million kW. A total of 81 units are under construction, with a total installed capacity of about 88 million kW. In 2021, China generated 407.5 billion KWH of nuclear power, equivalent to a reduction of 1.2 billion tons of standard coal and 3.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide. China's nuclear power design, construction and equipment manufacturing capabilities have been rapidly improved, and a number of comprehensive nuclear energy heating and other projects have been actively promoted.

At present, China's nuclear power technology and industry has completed the transformation and upgrading from the second generation to the third generation. The first batch of Hualong One technology projects at home and abroad have been fully completed and put into commercial operation. The development and application of new generation nuclear technologies such as small reactors are also being accelerated.

The report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China called for the active, safe and orderly development of nuclear power. This has pointed out the direction and put forward the requirements for the future development of nuclear power in China. "Going forward, China will continue to maintain high R&D investment in nuclear energy and nuclear fuel cycle technology, so as to promote new technological innovation and contribute to global nuclear energy development." 'said Wang Shoujun.

It is understood that the theme of this conference is "Nuclear energy Innovation: Zero Carbon Future", hosted by the Chinese Nuclear Society. The Pacific Nuclear Energy Conference is a biennial academic and industrial conference sponsored by the Pacific Nuclear Council. It has become one of the most influential conferences in the global nuclear energy field. The Pacific Nuclear Council is composed of nuclear societies/associations in Pacific Rim countries/regions, such as the Chinese Nuclear Society, the American Nuclear Society, the Korean Nuclear Society, the Japanese Atomic Energy Society, and the Australian Nuclear Society.
