On February 2, 2024, the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council held a meeting in the southern city of Almaty, Kazakhstan, to conduct in-depth discussions and exchanges on topics such as the integrated development process of the Eurasian Economic Union.
At the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council meeting, Kazakhstani Prime Minister Myelov stated that 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty. After years of development, the alliance covers a population of approximately 190 million, has a labor market of 93 million, and a GDP of 2.7 trillion US dollars. From 2015 to 2022, the scale of mutual trade between member countries has doubled, reaching 85 billion US dollars. These data fully demonstrate the potential and development momentum of the Eurasian Economic Union.
At the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council, Kazakhstani Prime Minister Smilov emphasized that achieving free movement of goods, services, capital, and labor within the alliance and fully implementing the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty is the main goal of alliance integration. He stated that the leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union countries have signed several important documents, including the Economic Development Declaration, in 2023. These documents clarify the key directions for the Eurasian integration process in the next five years and provide clear guidance for further deepening cooperation.
Smalov also stated that member countries of the Eurasian Economic Union are located on the Eurasian transportation hub, and Kazakhstan attaches great importance to the development of transit transportation cooperation. He is willing to implement joint projects with all member countries to promote regional development.
At the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council meeting, Russian Prime Minister Mishusky stated that the development of the Eurasian Economic Union has demonstrated its ability to adapt to the constantly changing international environment. In the first 11 months of 2023, the GDP of member countries increased by about 3.5%, and the internal market of the alliance has eliminated 10 trade barriers and continuously optimized free circulation in four major areas. These achievements demonstrate the stability and development potential of the Eurasian Economic Union.
Mishusky stated that with the increasing influence of the alliance, more and more countries and international organizations are expressing interest in establishing closer mutually beneficial relationships with it. For this reason, he believes that member countries should fully implement the economic "roadmap" plan and develop contacts with multiple countries, including China.
