On August 12, 2023, the eastern section of Algeria's East West Expressway project was opened to traffic at the construction section of China Railway 14th Bureau. Algerian Prime Minister Abdulrahman attended the opening ceremony and cut the ribbon.

The 84 kilometer project of the eastern section of the Algerian East West Expressway, which runs from De Re'an in Taf Province in the west to the border town of Ramleswig adjacent to Tunisia in the east, is being completed and opened to traffic. China Railway 14th Bureau undertakes the 40.68 kilometer main line and seven interchanges. Its completion and opening marks the official opening of the entire Algerian East West Expressway, which is a major transportation artery that crosses Algeria.

Algerian Prime Minister Abdulrahman unveiled the monument to the opening of the road. He stated that the East Section project is a great 'century project' built by Chinese enterprises in the local area, fully demonstrating the deep and stable friendship between China and Algeria. After the opening of the road, it will greatly promote Algeria's economic and social development, strengthen friendly exchanges with neighboring countries, enrich the material and cultural life of the people, and accelerate the progress of resource development work.

The Algerian East West Expressway has a total length of 1216 kilometers and is the highest construction level and most complex geological condition highway project in Algeria since its founding. It runs across the northern part of the country and is divided into three sections: east, middle, and west, connecting Tunisia to the east and Morocco to the west.

Among them, the 84km east section project is the last section of highway project that runs through Afghanistan's east-west expressway. The constructors of China Railway 14th Bureau have overcome a series of technical problems such as high fill, marlstone geology, and many unfavorable conditions such as the COVID-19, bad weather, and lack of construction materials. The design filling height of this section can reach a maximum of 44.7 meters, equivalent to the height of a 15 story building. In order to ensure the compaction of the soil, the builders used foreign standards to compact it step by step, like making a "thousand layer cake", with a total of 149 layers.

In addition, the construction of four curved viaducts on the M1 section of the Algeria East West Expressway by China Railway 14th Bureau is of utmost importance. The 251 super large bridge has successively crossed rivers, railways, and highways, posing great safety risks. The builders have set up protective sheds and used the form of suspension grouting to safely cross. This project is the largest cash exchange project implemented in Algeria since its founding, and has won the National Gold Award for High Quality Engineering.Editor/Ma Xue
