SSE Renewables and Equinor have decided to cancel plans for hydrogen production at the Dogger Bank D offshore wind project in the UK and focus entirely on supplying electricity to the UK grid.

The green hydrogen development proposal for the project was presented at the end of 2023, and the developer has also contracted Genesis, H2GO Power and Fichtner to carry out feasibility and optimization studies related to the potential large-scale green hydrogen development of the Dogger Bank D project.

However, SSE and Equinor recently announced that they have confirmed the Dogger Bank D project to Birkhill Wood, an onshore grid connection point in the northeast of England, while cancelling plans to use the wind energy produced by the project for hydrogen production.

"Birkhill Wood is a proposed 400 kV substation in East Yorkshire that will be built as part of National Grid's Big Grid Upgrade project. In addition, the company is exploring the possibility of future coordination of offshore mixed assets between the development of the Dogger Bank D project and the UK and European electricity markets to form a multi-purpose interconnect."

The Dogger Bank D project, the fourth phase of the Dogger Bank wind farm, will be located approximately 210 km off the northeast coast of England, in the eastern region of Dogger Bank C, covering an area of 262 square km, with a planned installed capacity of approximately 2 GW, with plans to install 128 wind turbines and up to six offshore platforms.

The first three phases of Dogger BankA, B and C have a combined installed capacity of 3.6GW, and after the completion of the fourth phase, the total installed capacity of the Dogger Bank project will exceed 5.5 GW. Editor/Xu Shengpeng
